Downtown Kansas City

Downtown Kansas City neighborhoods, or districts, are unique and diverse – from the types of residential housing to interesting places to visit.

River Market and Columbus Park are located just south of the Missouri River. River Market has been a gathering place for Kansas City residents since the 1800s. River Market features a weekly farmer’s market in addition to more than 30 specialty shops. Berkley Riverfront Park, the Riverfront Heritage Trail and Steamboat Arabia Museum are located in these neighborhoods.

The Library District is in the Central Business District and is rapidly becoming one of downtown’s finest neighborhoods. The new Central Library is located here along with the Lyric Theatre, Folly Theatre and Quality Hill Playhouse. Other points of interest include the Hotel Savoy and the 10th and Main Transit Plaza.

The Financial District is also in the Central Business District. Many of Kansas City’s banking institutions are located here and the residential neighborhood is one of the newest in Downtown. There are two parks, Ilus Davis Park and Oppenstein Park, creating an open feeling that is juxtaposed against the tallest residential building in Missouri: the former Fidelity Bank and Trust Building. The Midland Theatre is also located here.

The Government District is on the eastern edge of the Central Business District and this district is quite desirable as government buildings are being converted into luxury condominiums. City Hall, the Federal Courthouse and the Kansas City Fire Museum are located here and this district is the future home of the Sprint Center Arena.

The Convention District is the home of Bartle Hall, the city’s convention center, and will be the home of Kansas City Live!, which will feature more than 450,000 square feet of retail space and residential units.

Points of interest in the Convention District include Avenue of the Arts, Music Hall, Barney Allis Plaza, and Municipal Auditorium.

Crossroads Arts District was created by local artists who converted the brick buildings into galleries, studios and living space. First Fridays is a popular art crawl through the area’s art galleries, held on the first Friday of each month. The Historic Freight House, Kansas City Ballet, Kansas City Star Production Facility, the Webster House and Science City are located here.

Union Hill with its beautiful Victorian homes and brick streets is in southern downtown. Crown Center is adjacent to Union Hill and provides downtown residents with some of the areas best shopping, dining and entertainment. A new IRS processing center and Federal Reserve headquarters are under construction here. The American Heartland Theater, Crown Center Shops and Ice Terrace, Hallmark Visitors Center, Liberty Memorial, Penn Valley Park, Union Cemetery, and Union Station are located in these two districts.

Hospital Hill is named for the two hospitals located in the district. Both Longfellow and Hospital Hill districts have excellent views of the downtown skyline. Some of downtown’s most magnificent historical homes are located in these two districts. Hyde Park and Sheila Kemper Dietrich Park provide open space and Coterie Theatre offers entertainment along with the districts’ many nightclubs. There are also restaurants and shops.

The 18th and Vine Historic Jazz District is the birthplace of jazz. The architecture and style of the 1920s, 30s and 40s is being recreated in the district with new restaurants and entertainment venues. More than 175,000 visitors come to the district annually to see, hear, feel, and experience history at the Lincoln Building, Mutual Musicians Foundation, American Jazz Museum, Horace M. Peterson Visitors Center, Negro League Baseball Museum, Gem Theater, Gregg Klice Community Center, Kansas City Call Newspaper, Jay McShann Outdoor Pavilion, Gates Center and Bar-B-Que, Arthur Bryant’s Barbeque, and the Black Archives of Mid America.

The Westside District lies on the western edge of downtown. The residential neighborhood is well-established and overlooks the southern part of downtown. There are small parks throughout the district. Southwest Boulevard is popular for dining and entertainment. Places of interest include the Jarboe Park, Kemper Arena and Mulkey Park.

Kansas City, famous for its barbeque, friendly people and casual atmosphere, is known as the “City of Fountains,” as it has more fountains than any other city in the world, except Rome. Area theaters include the American Heartland Theatre, the Coterie Theater, the Unicorn Theater, Folly Theater, and the Kansas City Repertory Theatre. The Kansas City Ballet performs at the Lyric Theater and the Midland Theater. The Lyric Opera of Kansas City and the Kansas City Symphony also perform at the Lyric Theater. Musical performances are presented at the University of Missouri’s Conservatory of Music, the University of Kansas and William Jewel College. Live music is also heard at various parks around Kansas City, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department.

There are plenty of professional sports teams in Kansas City, including the NFL’s Chiefs, MLB’s Royals, MLS’s Wizards and various college sports teams.

Shopping areas in Kansas City include Crown Center, home to Hallmark Cards. Crown Center Shops has more than unique 60 stores, shops and boutiques, Hall’s, a major department store, and restaurants, including The American Restaurant, awarded four stars by Mobil. Crown Center also sponsors year round activities, including fashion shows, puppet theater, magic shows, collections and exhibits, ethnic festivals, concerts, a pumpkin patch and Crayola Christmas Land.
